TSANGAYA STUDENTS (AL-MAJIRI) AND OUT OF SCHOOL CHILDREN PROGRAMME

Introduction:
Nigeria Arabic Language Village, Ngala (NALV) was established in 1992. NALV is located in the ancient town of Ngala, Borno State.
The Nigeria Arabic Language Village, Ngala has the following mandates to:
Provide Immersion Programme which was designed to replace the One Year Oversea Programme for 300 Level B.A Arabic Students in all Nigerian Universities (public and private), as recommended by National University Commission (NUC).
Provide compulsory Arabic Acculturation Programme to all the Arabic Language Students in various Colleges of Education across the Nation public and private as a requirement stated by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
Serve as a focal point for the teaching of Arabic to all interested Nigerians.
Encourage research into the problems of learning of Arabic Language in Nigeria: translate to and from the Arabic Language with reference to other languages especially English.
Serve as the coordinating Centre for the implementation of every policy of the Federal Government as it relates to the promotion of Arabic Language.
Teaching Arabic Language to out of school children and Sangaya pupils (Al-Majiri) Arabic language.
Serve as a Centre for developing curriculum for Arabic Language.
Serves as a Centre for training and capacity building for Arabic teachers.
Serves as a Centre for documentation of Arabic manuscripts in Sub- Saharan Africa.
Vision:
The Vision of Nigeria Arabic Language Village is to enhance the studies of Arabic Language as an efficient vehicle for communication and an effective tool of International relation and Cooperation for Nigeria.
Mission:
The mission of the Nigeria Arabic Language Village is to encourage fluency, Proficiency and competence in the Learning of Arabic Language and Literature in Nigeria under an enabling environment.
Objectives of Nireia Arabic Language Village:
The Objectives of the Village shall be to promote the study and use of Arabic Language in Nigeria through exploring all relevant and available avenues, potentials and resources to make the Village an effective teaching and Learning Centre for the study of Arabic, and a resource Centre for specialized Professional Services to the Public and Private sectors of the Nigerian economy.
About the Tsangaya / Out of School Children
The Tsangaya / Out of School Children unit was established in 2021 by Village Academic Board. This became imperative so as to bring the Al-Majiri closer to the formal education by training and developing the capacity of their teachers to be professional and expose them to modern techniques of teaching Arabic language. On the other hand the Al-Majiri (student of Traditional Qur’anic School) would be taught basic knowledge of Arabic education that would qualify them to be integrated and mainstreamed into formal education system. For the Out of School Children, NALV would partner with State governments, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and non-governmental Organizations to identify Out of School Children to re-enroll and bring them back to School. This programme of NALV would create avenue for such students to be admitted into High Islamic Schools to attain Secondary School Certificate that would qualify them to further their education at Colleges and Universities.
Objectives of the Tsangaya and Out of School Children:
Objectives of the Tsangaya programme are to:
Teach the basic Arabic language for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels
Provide undiluted information and knowledge, that the language would guide the students particularly regarding to the understanding of religious ideological concepts to avoid misrepresentation, misinterpretation and misunderstanding.
Create avenue for the integration and mainstreaming of Al-Majiri and out of school children into formal education to allow them further their education.
provide vocational skills for those who may not be interested to further their education (such as Arabic Calligraphy, CorelDraw and others
Increase number of qualified teachers with modern techniques of teaching Arabic language in Tsangaya Schools.
Justification
Nigeria Arabic Language Village after having understanding the insecurity challenges in the country, deem it necessary to intervene and find lasting solutions to the challenges of Al-Majiri and Out of School Children.
The intervention of NALV was informed by the fact that Federal government in its effort to expand access to standard and quality education, captured Out of School Children in the Ministerial Strategic Plan, pillar one (1) of Federal Ministry of Education as one of the priority areas of Mr. president for education Agenda2030.
Programmes:
Tsangaya and Out of School Children Unit was established to train subjects in Arabic for the beneficiaries of non-formal Institutions of learning and out of school children who developed interest to continue with their studies. This programme would qualify the students to be integrated into conventional schooling system for instance Higher Islamic Schools, NALV Diploma up to the University level
The Tsangaya and Out of School Children Programme is categorize into three different categories, the Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
Beginners
Students for this level would be taught the basic education that would expose them to know how to read and write in Arabic and also teaching them to know basic knowledge of Hisab (Arithmetic). The target students in this category are the pupils, (Al-Majiri) and the drop out children around the age of 5 – 10 years.
Intermediate
The students for this level are normally selected through interview to assess their intellectual performance before being admitted. Thus, the requirements for enrolment to such level, that student must be exposed to basic literacy in Arabic language.
The pupils at this level would be engaged to formation of sentences, introduced to rules of Arabic Grammar, Morphology and Arabic conversation.
Advanced level
The students at the advanced level are mostly senior students from Traditional Qur’anic Schools and majorities have memorized the Glorious Qur’an while for the out of school children are mostly those who were dropped out of School.
Extensive training and drilling would be given to the student in Arabic language such as Arabic grammar, morphology to mention but a few.

The following subjects or courses are to be taught for the Intermediate level of Sangaya programme:
Imla’a (Dictation)
Insha’ / Ta’abir (Composition)
Nahwu / Sarf (Arabic Grammar and Morphology)
Muhadatha (Conversation)
Subjects to be taught at the Advanced level
The students at the Advanced level of Sangaya Programme are expected to be taught the following subjects:
Nahwu / Sarf (Grammar / Morphology)
Muhadatha (Conversation)
Insha’ / Ta’abir (Composition)
Turq al-Tadris (Methods of Teaching)

Duration of the Programme
Teachers:-The duration of the programme for the training of the teachers of Sangaya is three (3) months.
Al-Majiri :- The duration for the teaching of out of School Children and the Al-majiri expected to run for six (6) months.

Registration Fees
Capacity training of teachers = Ꜻ 25,000
Al-Majiri (students) = Ꜻ 35,000
Out of School Children = Ꜻ 35,000
Certificate
Certificates would be issued to all who successfully completed the programme at all levels
